A pair of iconic Mid-Century "1401" lounge chairs designed by Wim Rietveld for the Dutch manufacturer Gispen. This set features a classic enameled sheet metal frame and black Bakelite armrests, complemented by newer upholstered red fabric. The minimalist, industrial aesthetic is a hallmark of Wim Rietveld's design philosophy, emphasizing functionality and structural clarity. The chairs are offered as a set of two, making them a complete seating solution.
Imported directly from the Netherlands, these chairs are in good original condition with visible wear on the frames consistent with their age and usage. Wim Rietveld (1927-1985), the son of renowned De Stijl architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, forged his own legacy in Dutch design with a focus on functional, modern furniture. He joined Gispen as a designer in 1953, where he played a pivotal role in the company's transition to post-war modernism. His designs, including the "1401" chair, were known for their innovative use of materials, particularly bent sheet steel and Bakelite, to create affordable and durable furniture for a new generation. The "1401" chair, with its clean lines and industrial feel, is an enduring example of his work and a significant piece of Dutch design history.
