About the Item
Rare and important chair from 1902-1903 by Danish architect Martin Borch (1852-1937) originally designed for the interior of Rigsdagen and was later used as the chair for the judge at the Danish Court.
The chair is crafted of solid oak and carries the original grey wool upholstery.
Martin Borch (1852–1937) was a prominent Danish architect known for his refined historicist style and dedication to craftsmanship. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he became Royal Building Inspector and was responsible for numerous institutional and private projects.
His work spans from monumental public buildings such as the Provincial Archives of Aarhus and Sct. Andreas Church in Copenhagen to sensitive restorations of landmarks like Vor Frue Kirke and Regensen. Borch’s designs often combine influences from the Italian and Dutch Renaissance with a distinctly Nordic character, evolving toward a more medieval-inspired aesthetic around 1900.
He also created custom furniture and decorative elements for his buildings, emphasizing harmony between architecture and interior design. Borch was twice awarded the Eckersberg Medal and knighted for his contributions to Danish architecture
The chair has been in the private collection of a former judge until now.
