About the Item

A rare and exceptional armchair designed by Olof Ottelin and produced by Keravan Stockmann in Finland in 1958. This model, known as the Jumbo (model number 174), is a highly distinctive and iconic piece, regarded as Ottelin’s most original creation and, notably, his personal favorite. Reflecting the design trends of the era, the Jumbo chair was part of the mid-century movement that embraced low lounge chairs, typically placed in front of fireplaces or positioned to take in scenic views through large windows. Today, this chair stands out not only for its unusual form and innovative use of materials but also for its striking color choices, making it a rare gem in the world of Scandinavian design. In contrast to the more common use of primary colors and basic woods in Scandinavian furniture at the time, the Jumbo chair was available in lacquered versions of blue, red, and white. Of these, the blue version stands out as the most captivating, especially when paired with the original saddle leather armrests that have developed a beautiful, rich patina over time. The combination of these elements creates a visually compelling and playful design that is eye-catching from every angle. The chair’s construction showcases a brilliant mix of craftsmanship and design innovation. Its lacquered solid beech wood frame supports a gently rounded and slightly curved back and seat, creating a soft, inviting silhouette. The saddle leather armrests add a luxurious touch, contrasting beautifully with the bold color of the frame. The clever use of curves and varying materials gives the Jumbo chair its dynamic, yet harmonious appearance. While the original floral upholstery is showing signs of age with some stains and discoloration, this only adds to the chair’s vintage character. We leave the choice to the customer whether to preserve the original fabric or reupholster the chair to their own taste. If the latter is preferred, we take great care throughout the reupholstery process to ensure the piece retains its historical integrity while refreshing it for years of future enjoyment. This armchair is not just a piece of furniture; it’s a statement of design, a testament to Ottelin’s vision, and a timeless piece that combines form, function, and craftsmanship in a way that few others can match. Condition report: Vintage pieces carry unique history and charm, including age-related wear. We provide detailed photos of each item’s condition. Please review them carefully, and feel free to reach out with any questions or for more details.
