About the Item

Oscar Niemeyer “Alta” easy chair for Mobilier International, black leather and steel, France, 1971. The “Alta” lounge chair, conceived in 1971 by Oscar Niemeyer in collaboration with his daughter Anna Maria, exemplifies the sculptural tension and sensual geometry at the heart of Brazilian modernist design. Built from curved steel bands that loop and bend into a continuous, ribbon-like base, the chair suspends its volume with architectural poise and lightness. The seat and backrest, upholstered in black leather, are defined by subtle button tufting that echoes Niemeyer’s affinity for rhythmic surface modulation. The chair’s reclining profile enhances comfort while maintaining a sense of formal clarity—an interplay of structure and softness that recalls the architect’s buildings, from the sinuous forms of Brasília to the expressive shell of the French Communist Party headquarters in Paris, for which this model was originally designed. More than a seat, the “Alta” is a spatial gesture—where furniture becomes an extension of architectural thought. Its presence channels Niemeyer’s lifelong pursuit of freedom through form.
