About the Item

An exceptionally rare and historically important pair of 'ON' lounge chairs designed by Oscar Niemeyer for the Hotel SESC in Rio de Janeiro. This set comprises the pair of sculptural 'ON' lounge chairs accompanied by its original matching sofa (this listing is for the lounge chairs priced as a pair, whereas the three-seat sofa is listed in a separate listing but photos of the chairs together with the sofa are included at the end of the photo gallery in this listing), executed in richly figured Brazilian rosewood with cream leather upholstery. Created specifically for the Hotel SESC interiors, these pieces were never mass-produced and were custom fabricated for the project, making surviving original examples extraordinarily scarce. The design exemplifies Niemeyer’s unmistakable approach to furniture, translating his architectural language into functional sculpture. The bold, curved exotic Jacaranda Rosewood arm and side panels create a powerful visual rhythm, while the floating seat and back cushions introduce softness and balance. The dramatic grain patterns throughout the rosewood are especially striking, showcasing the exotic materiality that distinguishes early Brazilian modernism and is no longer available in contemporary production. This set is an original hotel installation from the 1980s, not a later licensed reproduction. Current reissues of the 'ON' lounge chairs, produced by Etel, are executed in alternative woods and cannot be fabricated in rosewood, making material choice one of the clearest indicators of authenticity. Additional confirmation is found in the evident age, patina, period hardware, and construction details consistent with original project-specific production for Hotel SESC. The cream leather upholstery, both elegant and restrained, complements the warmth of the rosewood and maintains the integrity of Niemeyer’s original vision. Light wear and surface variation are present, consistent with age and use, and contribute to the authenticity and character of the set rather than detract from it. This ensemble represents a rare opportunity to acquire an architecturally significant work by one of the most influential figures of 20th-century modernism. Equally suited for a serious private collection, a museum or institutional setting, or a high-level residential or hospitality interior, this Oscar Niemeyer 'ON' seating group stands as a sculptural, cultural, and historical statement piece of Brazilian design. MEASUREMENTS: H 32.5" x W 45.25" x D 35" Seat Height: 18.75" Seat Depth: 24.5" Arm Height: 25.75" CONDITION: Overall good vintage condition and ready for immediate use in a vintage setting. Leather has some discoloration, fading, color touch ups, light scratches and general wear but still attractive and plenty of life left to them. Can be reupholstered to a new leather or fabric of your choosing, contact us for details. Rosewood frame has some bubbling and rippling to the veneer, some fading to areas, one small chip and other smaller blemishes including scratches and minor scuffs. One metal hardware (screw cover) piece missing on the side, see photos. Overall presents very well and can be used immediately in a vintage setting or can be refinished and reupholstered if desired. Given this is an original of the design, we decided to leave it original so the buyer can decide on whether to refinish, reupholster or not. We can handle refinishing and reupholstery for you, contact us for details.

Davantazi produced by Elam and retailed by The Pace Collection. Perfect for a cigar, whiskey or wine lounge or any space that can use something a bit modern yet still refined and classy. *Note, we have the matching loveseat / settee and three-seat sofa in another listing. 1970s Alta Lounge Chair Attributed to Oscar Niemeyer for Mobilier Intl of France
By Oscar Niemeyer, Mobilier International
Located in Philadelphia, PA
We present this 'Alta' lounge chair, featuring a curved brushed stainless steel frame, and a generous seat pad that is upholstered in a black fabric. The chair was acquired from a Philadelphia-area estate, accompanied by other noteworthy pieces by Mies Van Der Rohe, Florence Knoll, and Finn Juhl. The chair was designed in 1971 by Oscar Niemeyer, in collaboration with Anna Maria Niemeyer. This particular example is attributed to Mobilier International as far as production, though the piece is unmarked. This special piece was launched in France, and was Niemeyer’s first foray into the field of industrialized and commercialized furniture. This is a listing for one lounge chair. The chair measures 45 inches in depth, 31 inches in width and 31 inches tall. The seat height is 18 inches. The black upholstery is in wonderful condition and the thick foam seat pad is intact and is in great shape. The chair shoes some light wear from use. Oscar Niemeyer was a critical figure in the Brazilian Modernist architectural movement, and the capital city of Brasilia owes much of its curvaceous futuristic facade to his vision. The acquisition of this important chair...
