About the Item

These sculptural and softly voluminous armchairs are modern copies of 1930's Hungarian originals. Though French Art Deco is more famous, Budapest, Hungary was a center of Art Deco design during the interwar period. Experience gained during the Biedermeier era (early 1800's) was easily redeployed into making Deco and Modern furniture a century later. The rich macassar veneer on the arms provides a sleek counterpoint to the plush upholstered seats and sides. The chairs are comfortable and without being overly large. Slanted backs create a sleek side profile and generous cushioning provides lower back support. These chairs blend well with modern decor, combining easily with furnishings of different periods, places and materials.

Rare Pair of 1950 s Modern Anglo-Indian Arm Chairs
Located in Chicago, IL
These Anglo-Indian lounge chairs date to the early 1950's and were made in the Mid-Century style. During the British Colonial period and in the two decades after independence, much Indian furniture was made following British or European styles. However, these "Indian Modern" pieces were original designs and simpler and sturdier than their European counterparts. Exquisite native hardwood were used, such as Teak and Rosewood and woven rattan was substituted for upholstery, which grew musty in the humid Indian climate. Lines and details were simple. Over time, Indian craft became very sophisticated and design became more and more creative. Whether the vintage furniture...
