About the Item

The F598 Groovy chairs, designed in the early 1970s by Pierre Paulin for Artifort, are iconic expressions of the optimistic, sculptural language that defined Paulin’s work during this period. With their flowing, organic contours and low, enveloping posture, the Groovy chairs embody the spirit of the 1970s: relaxed, progressive, and unapologetically modern. The continuous form, created from a steel frame and moulded foam, gives the chairs a soft, almost liquid appearance, while the generous curves invite the body to sink in naturally. These are not chairs that impose structure, but rather pieces that respond intuitively to the human form. Upholstered in blue wool, this pair retains a calm yet expressive presence. The subtle, even fading of the fabric speaks to authenticity and age, enhancing the sculptural quality rather than detracting from it. As a pair, the Groovy chairs create a powerful visual statement equally suited to a curated modernist interior, a gallery setting, or a bold contemporary space. About the Designer Pierre Paulin (1927-2009) was one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century. Renowned for redefining seating through ergonomic research and sculptural experimentation, Paulin created designs that were both radically modern and deeply human. His collaborations with Artifort resulted in some of the most iconic furniture of the post-war era, many of which are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the MoMA and Centre Pompidou. Condition Very good vintage condition, with subtle, age-appropriate wear and a light, natural fading of the wool upholstery consistent with age.
