About the Item

As with the UK and much of Europe, there was something of a design renaissance in France in the decades following the Second World War, due to developments in materials and technology. In France, designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models, such as these lounge chairs. The solid elm wood structures immediately stand out, their vertical and horizontal lines are cleverly combined to create the unique look. The frames showcase the exceptional level of woodworking with seamless joinery techniques and a structural composition that assumes architectural knowledge as well. From the spindles forming the back to the arms, to the sturdy legs and their stretchers, these lounge chairs show clear evidence that they are the products of a highly skilled craftsman. With the exception of the four stretchers connecting the legs, the frames have rounded edges and subtly curved elements such as the armrests and the headrests. Since the chairs are composed of several individual parts, they exude an airy look despite their solid elm bodies. Elm wood is very durable thanks to its interlocked grain that also gives it a visually stunning look. The design is further elevated by the newly upholstered back and seat cushions with a stylish bouclé fabric with a rich texture. The back cushions have a round shape so that besides complementing the overall impression of the lounge chairs, they also allow the decorative backs to stay visible. In France, the 1970s saw brilliant designers and architects working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored modern shapes and forms. This pair of sculptural lounge chairs shows how successful these experiments were. Their sleek lines and curved contours are a testament to the mastery of form and function that defined the French design movement of the time. Condition: In very good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some scratches and marks on the wood. The cushions have been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Pair of Wooden Armchairs with Upholstered Cushions, Europe 20th Century
Located in Utrecht, NL
With wedge and hammer, the chair-maker slowly creates shorter pieces to be worked into the seat, spindle, crest rail, and legs. This pair of wooden armchairs stands as a proud example of traditional design practice; their solid nail-free joints highlight the skill and artistry of its makers. This construction method enhances the armchairs’ structure and presents the reverence it deserves. This set borrows from great past examples, such as the Windsor chair or - more broadly - the spindle models widely used throughout Europe during the 20th century. These elements render this specific design truly timeless. They are among the most recognisable models of mid-century chairs in Europe. The spindle chairs are a ubiquitous classic that does just as well in the living room, dining room or even the hall, drawing every eye to it. The proportions are well-thought-out, and the see-through design adds a simple and airy touch. Each chair of this set has fifteen symmetrically arranged wooden slim spindles that form the back and armrests. A continuous arm and bow-back frame the slim spindles, offering a seamless joint from the seat and the back. The legs splay outward and run into the seat, which is a single wood piece slightly inclined to assist a more comfortable seating experience combined with the custom-made cushion upholstered in premium bouclé fabric. This model’s design is a classic that goes beyond trends, a product of a deep-rooted desire to showcase impeccable craftsmanship and a stylish aesthetic without compromising the quality of production or materials. This spindle chair set...
