New Stock ✅ Pair of Matching Robin Day for Hille 1952 Reclining Lounge Chairs Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM Purchased in 1960 from Elders, a furniture store in Glasgow, Scotland on Argyle Street which we’ve got an old photograph of. They have been in the same family ever since and came to us to be professional restored and reupholstered in a beautiful cream off white bouclé fabric. These are the genuine 1952 for Hille originals and not the modern licensed reproduction versions. The matching sofa bed, which was purchased at the same time, will be listed soon and can be purchased to complete the lounge seating set. The ‘Reclining Chair’ was originally designed in 1952 with mahogany armrests and was considered by Robin Day to be one of his most successful and iconic designs. The high comfort levels and clearly articulated structure fulfilled Day's exacting design sensibilities. The modernist vocabulary of the reclining chair encapsulates principles that were inherent in much of his wide body of work. The ‘Reclining Chair’ continued a dialogue which Robin Day began in the late 1940s, in which a minimal steel rod frame provided support and structure for a host of seating and table designs. Robin Day is one of the most significant British designers of the 20th century. Since winning first prize in the Storage Section of the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design (organised by MOMA in 1948), Day built a legacy of innovation and forward focused design. As a result of winning the MOMA award, Robin Day was sought out by the cabinet-making firm of S.Hille Co, and began a partnership that flourished over the ensuing decades. Hille company had specialized in reproduction furniture but with the ambitious young designer on board, Hille completely changed direction and embraced modern design.
