About the Item

A remarkable set of Mel Smilow “Railback” chairs in light walnut, reupholstered in vintage, 100% wool salvaged from WWII-era wool blankets. Mel Smilow designed these chairs in 1950, including an especially deep seat that you sink into, making these chairs unlike so many others from the mid-century. The vintage wool upholstery that covers the new, 5” polyurethane foam cushions exhibits patina and wear earned only through generations, with sun-fading creating a unique pattern to the faces of the cushions, and leftover visual queues that hint at the material’s previous history. The combination of these robust materials harken to a time-tested story in heritage-quality design, fit for a new chapter. Good condition. Wear is consistent with age. Frame: Expect knicks, dings, scratches, fading, discoloration, etc. Upholstery: This upholstery has been made with vintage, used material. Expect small holes, discoloration, fading, and artifacts leftover from its past.
