About the Item

Magnificent Pair of 'Low Rider' G Plan Teak Housemaster Chairs and Footstools by K M Wilkins Circa 1970. The chairs retailed through Harrods and Heals in the1970s, they were one of the most iconic British designed chairs of the age and captured the swinging ‘mid century’ mood perfectly. The seating position is low with a wonderful swivel acton and a slight rocking motion, the chairs were very expensive when new in the early to mid 1970s and were only available from 1971 to 1976, With matching footstools to compliment them, the chairs and stools and have both been recovered in a beautiful biscuit color boucle fabric, all internal cushion foams have been replaced with new fire compliant ones. The Housemaster chair was designed by K.M. Wilkins who designed other upholstered furniture for G Plan such as the Saddle suite, but the Housemaster chair must be his most prominent design. The 1974 G Plan catalogue description read ” This exciting new concept in armchair design combines the newest advances in upholstery techniques with the luxury of a laminated, contoured frame veneered in handsome teak. The whole blissful creation is floated on a cradle of gleaming chrome-plated steel. The unique pentagonal base is specially designed to allow you to swivel a full 360 degrees, or gently rock to and fro, or just sit still – perfectly still “.
