About the Item
Pair of model Safari lounge chairs, designed by Ben af Schultén, manufactured by Artek, 1970s. Lacquered birch frame with beautiful patinated cognac leather upholstery. Good vintage condition, patina consistent with age and use. The lounge chairs are sold together as a set.
Ben af Schultén is a designer and former Artek Artistic Director. He is an interior architect by training.
Af Schultén worked for Artek from 1964 for almost 40 years, including as Artistic Director from 1976 to 2004. He was succeeded by British artist Tom Dixon. Af Schulten himself designed furniture, shop displays and exhibition posters for Artek. He also designed the interior of the Amos Anderson Art Museum, among others.
The Espa chair (1998) is the last piece of furniture af Schulten designed for Artek.
