About the Item
This is an important and exceptionally rare pair of wingback armchairs designed by Eva Koppel in 1947. The pair was manufactured by Slagelse Møbelværk in Denmark. The frames of these chairs are crafted from dark stained beech wood and upholstered in off-white "Savak" Wool. Each chair is paired with an extra seat cushion upholstered in green wool. A few extra buttons have also been included.
Eva Koppel was, along with Nanna Ditzel, one of the most prominent female designers in the Danish Modern movement in the mid 20th century. In the late 1930s she studied under Alvar Aalto and together with her husband Niels Koppel she was responsible for several famous buildings in Copenhagen. Among other important buildings in Denmark, architect couple Eva and Nils Koppel designed the famous Langelinie restaurant in Copenhagen. In 1955, Eva Koppel was awarded the Eckersberg Medal. From 1951 to 1973, she was vice-chairman of the board for the Design School for Women ("Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder"), and in 1972 she became a member of the Academy.
