About the Item

Pair of Phillip Lloyd Powell chairs from the New Hope school, featuring hand-sculpted walnut frames that display Powell's organic, handcrafted approach to woodworking. with flowing forms that emphasize the material's natural qualities. The sculptural frames create both structure and artistic expression. Chairs remain in original condition with walnut cleaned and newly oiled to nourish the wood and bring out grain patterns. Original support straps are intact, showing age-appropriate wear and patina but remaining structurally sound. New upholstery and down cushions were replaced approximately ten years ago, in very good condition. Powell worked in New Hope, Pennsylvania, creating studio furniture that rejected mass production in favor of individual craftsmanship. Each piece was hand-carved and unique, with tool marks and organic forms distinguishing his work from commercial mid-century furniture. The sculptural walnut and preservation of original elements including support straps make these examples representative of Powell's studio practice.
