About the Item

The Kangaroo Chair, model PJ-SI-59, was designed by Pierre Jeanneret in 1955, Chandigarh India. Constructed in solid Indian teak with handwoven cane, the chair embodies Jeanneret’s balance between modern European design principles and traditional Indian craftsmanship. The form is defined by its distinctive “Z” shaped profile, composed of three triangular wooden planes that create both structure and sculptural presence. The restored woven cane seat and backrest bring lightness to the substantial teak frame, casting geometric shadows through their natural pattern. This technique follows the original Chandigarh method, employing durable cane of thicker quality. The teak surfaces reveal warm tones ranging from cognac to deep chocolate. Treated with layered shellac, the finish produces a soft, irregular gloss that highlights the natural grain and individuality of each piece. Subtle irregularities underline the handcrafted character. The rear legs, known as “kangaroo legs,” extend seamlessly from the seat into the backrest, defining the chair’s silhouette and grounding the composition. Originally created for both public institutions and private residences in Chandigarh, the chair represents the city’s mid-century identity. Its material origins are equally significant: the wood was sourced from trees cleared during Chandigarh’s construction, a practice that anticipated sustainable approaches to furniture making. With their timeless presence, these chairs integrate naturally into diverse interiors, adding warmth and serenity. Suitable for living rooms, libraries, or contemplative spaces, they stand as emblematic works of modern design history.
