About the Item

An exceptional piece of mid-century modern design history, this iconic "Concorde" lounge chair was meticulously designed by the renowned French master, Pierre Paulin, and expertly manufactured by Artifort around 1960. This particular model holds a significant place in design lore, having been originally conceived for the exclusive waiting lounges of the Concorde services at Paris Airport, a testament to its forward-thinking design and inherent comfort. The chair's graceful, sculptural form is immediately recognizable, featuring a sinuous, organic silhouette that cradles the body, offering both sublime relaxation and a striking visual presence. This example retains its beautiful original brown upholstery, which complements the chair's flowing lines and minimalist base perfectly. The fabric's subtle texture adds to its sophisticated appeal, showcasing the quality craftsmanship synonymous with Artifort. The chair stands as a testament to Paulin's genius in blending ergonomic innovation with timeless aesthetic appeal. Whether placed in a discerning living room, a refined study, or as a statement piece in a contemporary interior, this "Concorde" lounge chair is not merely furniture, but a functional work of art that embodies the spirit of 1960s design innovation. It's an indispensable acquisition for collectors and enthusiasts of rare and important mid-century furniture. Width (W): 60 cm / 23.62 in Depth (D): 90 cm / 35.43 in Height (H): 91 cm / 35.83 in Seat Height (SH): 39 cm / 15.35 in Seat Depth (SD): 51 cm / 20.08 in Pierre Paulin (1927) made a considerable impression with a contemporary shell fauteuil, at an international furniture show organised by Kho Liang le. Shortly after the show, he became a freelance designer for Artifort. This marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration. What makes his designs so distinctive is their striking sculptural shape, which earned Paulin many prizes worldwide. His work remains timeless and progressive even today. This is not form for form’s sake but applied design. With comfort as the constant starting-point. Artifort still includes many of Paulin’s designs dating from the nineteen-sixties and seventies in its permanent collection. His work can be admired in museums throughout the world. Apart from furniture, he also designed interiors for the French presidents Pompidou and Mitterrand in the Elysée Palace in Paris. Pierre Paulin died on 13 June 2009 in a hospital in Montpellier (France). The French president Sarkozy honoured him as "the man who made design an art". In November 2009, Paulin was posthumously awarded the distinction of "Royal Designer for Industry" (RDI).
