About the Item

Frank Gehry’s Power Play Chair, designed in 1990 for Knoll International, draws inspiration from his childhood memories of playing on sturdy apple crates. Fascinated by the surprising strength of a simple wooden bushel basket, Gehry explored bentwood as both structure and sculpture. Crafted from laminated maple strips that are steamed and bent into continuous ribbon-like “S” curves, the chair’s basket-weave construction is both visually airy and remarkably strong. The clever interlocking design provides structural integrity while maintaining a sense of lightness, embodying Gehry’s vision of a product that is as sculptural as it is functional. One of the most celebrated architects of the late 20th century, Gehry seamlessly translated his architectural curiosity into this iconic piece of furniture design.
