About the Item

Åby Möbelfabrik, pair of 'Lövåsen' lounge chairs, solid pine, iron, Sweden, 1940s These Swedish barrel chairs originate in the so-called Sportstugemöbel tradition, a style shaped by leading designers such as Axel Einar Hjorth and Carl Malmsten, who created furniture series specifically for Swedish summer houses. Key features included the use of solid wood, primarily pine for its durability, as well as sturdy, unadorned forms designed for practical use. These examples were crafted by the Swedish furniture company Åby Möbelfabrik and feature a barrel-shaped construction in solid pine, reinforced with blackened iron bands. The slightly curved backrests and integrated armrests emphasize both comfort and structural integrity, while the visible grain of the pine enhances their honest, rustic character. Designed to age gracefully and withstand seasonal use, they remain timeless expressions of Swedish modern rustic design.
