About the Item

André Sornay, armchair, mahogany, suede, France, circa 1930 This rare armchair by André Sornay exemplifies his architectural approach to furniture design, created during the height of the Art Deco movement and at a defining moment in his career. The piece reflects Sornay’s ongoing exploration of structure and proportion. In this design, the vertical planes of richly toned mahogany intersect with the curved, upholstered elements in a composition that feels both deliberate and sculptural. The tiered backrest, gently curving around the seat, forms an embracing shape while maintaining a clear structural logic. This subtle play between solidity and openness gives the chair a distinctive presence. True to the philosophy of Sornay, the design avoids superfluous ornamentation. Instead, it creates a dialogue between materials and form. The smooth mahogany contrasts with the soft suede upholstery, allowing each to define the other. Few examples of this model were ever produced, making it an especially rare and significant piece within Sornay’s body of work. It stands as a refined expression of his vision: a synthesis of craftsmanship and modernity.
