About the Item

Jørgen Magnussen for Peder Pedersen, pair of rare armchairs, solid oak, lacquered steel, reupholstered in Teddy Bambi mohair by Pierre Frey Denmark, circa 1957 A presumably unique set of lounge chairs (ca. 1957), designed by Jørgen Magnussen, and crafted by the acclaimed Peder Pedersen studio, is a distinguished example of Scandinavian modernism. These pieces originally belonged to Jørgen Magnussen’s personal home, where it was accompanied by other furniture sharing the same unmistakable style. Magnussen's design exemplifies the postwar Scandinavian pursuit of democratic design; pieces that were accessible, practical, and aesthetically enduring. The cushions are newly upholstered in a Teddy beige mohair by Pierre Frey. The chairs are characterized by a distinctive geometric composition and daring mixture of materials. The foundation is composed of a tubular frame, painted in a striking red coral tone, beautifully complementing the warm hued oak. The angled backrest and the smooth planar surfaces of the armrests with subtly defined edges, adhere to the principles of functionalist design. The rectangular apertures in the back and the open negative space of the base maintain an open and lightweight visual presence. PP Møbler is a highly respected Danish furniture manufacturer, celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to quality. Established in 1953 by brothers Ejnar and Lars Peder Pedersen, the company started as a small 150 m² workshop in Allerød, Denmark. Over the decades, it has expanded significantly, now operating from an 1800 m² facility while staying true to its original location. From the beginning, PP Møbler collaborated with influential designers and artisans, including Finn Juhl and Hans J. Wegner. One of their early contributions was crafting the lower frame for Wegner's famous "Teddy Bear Chair" for A.P. Stolen. At the heart of PP Møbler’s philosophy is an unwavering commitment to superior craftsmanship. A well-known story illustrates this dedication: when Wegner once suggested that the hidden parts of a chair didn’t require the same level of precision, Ejnar Pedersen insisted that every detail, seen or unseen, should be crafted to perfection: both to honor the artisans' skill and uphold the company’s high standards. Today, under the leadership of the third generation, PP Møbler continues to produce both classic and modern designs, seamlessly blending traditional woodworking techniques with contemporary technology. Their legacy remains deeply rooted in Danish design, ensuring their pieces endure for generations to come.
