About the Item
Rare lounge chair in black leather and black lacquered metal, with tilt adjustment system using a locking screw. This lounge chair designed by Samuel Coriat began in 1986 and benefits from exceptional comfort and design.
Artelano : Founded by Samuel Coriat. Thirty-three years ago, he left Havas to found his own brand and design his first furniture. If he's just starting out, his style is already firmly defined: basic shapes and pure lines served by materials like glass, metal and lacquered wood. This taste for simplicity will subsequently guide his choices. His business is doing well but Samuel Coriat wants to take a step forward: he wants to become a publisher, that is to say, collaborate with designers on projects, from design to sale, including manufacturing. He contacts creators whose work, he thinks, matches what he likes. The first to be called, in 1987, was Pascal Mourgue. He then signed his first collection, “Atlantique”, for Artelano. The collaboration between the two men will continue and give birth to other creations. After the Italians Paolo Deganello, in 1992, and Carlo Bartoli, in 1993, Samuel Coriat worked in 1994 with the Frenchman Olivier Gagnère, for whom he produced the chairs and armchairs which today furnish the Café Marly, at the Louvre, in Paris.
Eric Gizard, Didier Gomez, the Milanese of Lissoni Associati, Claude Pelhaître, Richard Peduzzi, the Austrians of Studio Eoos, the British Marc Krusin, Christophe Pillet, the Italian Patricia Urquiola... are gradually enriching the catalog of the publisher of new collections, without ever giving in to concessions or commercial facilities
To celebrate its twenty years of publishing, Artelano is releasing eleven successes that have marked its career. Among others: the Atlantique console, the Colonnades bookcase and the Rio chair by Pascal Mourgue, the Paris-Milan molded wooden armchair by Piero Lissoni, the Damasco dining table and the Log armchair by Patricia Urquiola, the China Bay sofa by Christophe Pillet ... These pieces of furniture, which have not aged a bit, are, for Samuel Coriat, the best proof of his success.

These armchairs made of tinted wood are to be linked to another pair of armchairs executed by Gabriel Viardot, and now exhibited at the Decorative Arts Museum in Paris (Inv. 2006.105.1.2). They present a similar asymmetric design and an equal carving quality including the winding dragon on the back. (see picture attached)
Gabriel Viardot career began as a wood carver and he produced small furniture, sculpturally carved with naturalistic motifs and animals. In the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, his finely sculpted objects were well received. However, with the increasing importation of similarly produced Swiss and German articles, he found less opportunity for these and decided to innovate. G. Viardot succeeded to his father’s business in 1861 installed rue Rambuteau in Paris, circa 1870 he turned to the idea of producing “Meubles genre Chinois et Japonais”.
