About the Item

A rare pair of Clam chairs designed by Arnold Madsen for Madsen Schubell, Denmark, 1944. Featuring sculptural beechwood arms and legs, these iconic chairs are upholstered in real sheepskin from Skandilock. Celebrated for their organic, biomorphic form, the Clam chairs are characterized by soft, flowing curves throughout the gently contoured back, seat, and arms, all resting on distinctive club-shaped beech legs. The name derives from the silhouette created by the seat and back, which together resemble an open clam. Thoughtfully engineered for comfort, the back is subtly reclined while the seat rises slightly toward the front, allowing the chair to conform naturally to the body. Extremely rare and highly sought after, original Madsen Clam chairs are prized collector’s pieces. This pair has been fully restored and reupholstered in Curly sheepskin in the shade 'Sahara'. Designed in Copenhagen in 1944, the Clam chair has become an enduring icon of the Danish Modern movement. For many years, the design was mistakenly attributed to Danish architect Philip Arctander; however, recent research has definitively identified Arnold Madsen as the true designer. Known in Denmark as the Muslingstolen, the chair marked the first collaboration between Madsen and master cabinetmaker Henry Schubell, establishing a partnership that would lead to many years of successful and influential work.
