A magnificent pair of 19th-century hand-carved lounge chairs by the celebrated Italian sculptor Victor Aimone, whose mastery of Gothic Revival carving earned him international acclaim and a Gold Medal at the Paris Exhibition. These extraordinary chairs showcase Aimone’s unparalleled ability to merge fantasy, narrative, and refined craftsmanship into a single sculptural composition. The wooden backrests are a true highlight, intricately carved with a dramatic scene featuring two knights (the other chairs 2 monks) framed by a pair of powerful dragons. The dragons hold a central heraldic shield with their claws, their body, wings, and fierce expressions rendered with remarkable depth and precision. This commanding tableau captures the medieval spirit that defines Aimone’s most celebrated work. The armrests end in exquisitely carved satyrs, each figure portrayed with expressive musculature, curling horns, and a playful yet enigmatic presence, adding a mythological richness to the design. Beneath the seat, the legs feature striking demonlike faces with bat-like wings, a bold Gothic motif carved with exceptional detail and dramatic shadowing.
