Schmieder, 'Brasilia' lounge chairs with ottoman, faux leather, steel, Denmark, 1960s
The Brasilia lounge chairs paired with an ottoman from the Schmieder Edition are extremely rare and distinguished by a strongly sculptural form. Its name likely alludes to the Brazilian capital inaugurated in 1960, which quickly became a symbol of international modernism and utopian planning. The city’s architecture, associated with Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, is characterized by autonomous buildings, monumental scale, and a focus on structure and form over ornament. The chairs’ clearly defined seat and back form a compact, angular volume composed of sharply articulated planes, resonating with these architectural ideas. A chromed swivel base supports the dense upholstered body.
