About the Item

Ricardo Legorreta, armchair “Butaque”, oak, leather, Mexico, 1997 This “Butaque” armchair was designed by Ricardo Legorreta and manufactured by Legorreta Arquitectos in 1997 for the Schwab Residential Center at Stanford University. Made of wood and natural leather, the chair embodies Legorreta’s architectural sensibility, a balance of sculptural strength and material warmth. The design reinterprets the traditional Mexican butaque chair in a modern, architectural form, featuring a gently curved wooden frame and a slung leather seat that emphasizes both comfort and simplicity. The craftsmanship is honest and expressive, revealing Legorreta’s deep understanding of proportion and structure.

Mid-Century Modern, Arm Chair in Wood and Patinated Cognac Leather, 1950
By Josef Frank, Anna-Lülja Praun
Located in Hausmannstätten, AT
A spindle back armchair designed by Anna-Luelja Praun (1906-2004), Vienna, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1952. It is made of a warm toned solid wood frame with two loose leather cushions for the seat and the back. The cognac colored leather has a beautiful patina. The chair is in great condition with little wear on the cushions. About Anna-Lülja Praun: Anna-Lülja Praun was born in Sankt Petersburg, Russia, in 6/29/1906 and lived in Vienna until 9/28/2004. She was an important Austrian designer and architect and she was one of the first females who studied architecture in Austria. In 1947 she worked on the restoration of the palace Belvedere which was heavily damaged in the second world war. In 1952 she opened her own studio in Vienna. She designed houses, interiors, furniture, shops, light fixtures, and pottery (together with Gudrun Baudisch). From 1953-1959 she also worked for the furniture shop „Haus und Garten“ which was established by Josef Frank in 1925. In 1959 she designed a bench „Bank zum Ausruhen“ for the conductor Herbert von Karajan.
