About the Item

Boomerang chair design by Richard Neutra in 1942. Structure in plywood. Seat and back in Yarn. Black seat and backrest cushions included. Color upon request. In the early 1940s, Richard Neutra designed beautiful, functional furniture for the Channel Heights Housing Project in Los Angeles. He imagined residents crafting these simple modern pieces from scrap wood – a desk lamp, tables, and a distinctive piece that became known and loved as the Boomerang Chair. Dion Neutra, Richard’s son, who worked on the project while still in high school, recalled, “It was very idealistic. The furniture was entirely his initiative." Side frame: plywood, matt finish oak veneer, natural. Side bars: solid wood, matt finish oak, natural/charcoal mesh (netting) Carefully sewn strips of rigid yarn in dark brown or off white His houses flooded with light, Neutra shaped the scene of Californian Modernism. From there he rose to be an architectural icon of the “International Style”. Today Richard J. Neutra has long been seen as one of the great names in the history of modern architecture. Together with Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe he is one of the great pioneers of architecture and a trailblazer of Modernism. His work is both avant-garde and timeless. From 1932-1970 Neutra carried out more than 200 projects – houses and villas, hospitals, schools, museums, high-rise buildings, churches, conference centers, market halls, embassies. Neutra received a number of tributes posthumously, including that of the American Institute of Architecture. The Museum of Modern Art in New York honored him with a retrospective.
