About the Item

S46 "Dromadaire" Lounge Chair by Pierre Chapo in elm wood with a black leather seat and backrest. This chair is from Chapo's chlacc series. The seat can be folded upwards and depending on your weight and posture, the wood at the legs tilts upwards, so the seat stays connected to your upper legs. Designer and woodworker Pierre Chapo created timeless furniture that fused modern design with traditional craftsmanship. Among his loyal clientele was the playwright Samuel Beckett, for whom he created the “Godot” bed, named in honor of his renowned play. Born into a family of craftsmen, Chapo initially set out to become a painter; an encounter with a shipbuilder in 1947 convinced him to pursue woodworking instead. As a young man, he studied architecture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and traveled extensively. His visit to Frank Llyod Wright's famed home and school Taliesin West had a lasting influence on his work. Known for his use of the golden ratio, Chapo created chairs, tables, and benches that were both utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing. He and his wife also ran a shop that sold his wooden furniture, as well as the work of other craftsmen like Isamu Noguchi.
