About the Item

Rare original "Falcon" lounge chair and ottoman by Sigurd Russell made in chromed steel, canvas and beautiful reddish brown leather. The chair and ottoman is in really good original condition. Norwegian interior and industrial designer Sigurd Ressell (also spelled Resell) was particularly active during the 1950s and ‘60s and is best known for his collaboration with Vatne Møbler, which resulted in the iconic Falcon Chair. Born in 1920 in Meldal, Norway, Ressell studied carpentry at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft Art Industry from 1943 until 1947. Sometime in the late 1940s or early ‘50s, Ressell established his own studio, designing for various clients and manufacturers, including Niels Vodder. From 1948 to 1968, Ressell created interiors and furniture for Norwegian furniture brand Rastad Relling. Notable designs include the 56/1 and 61/1 Chairs for the Bambi Series (1955), the Blinken Armchair (1956), and furniture for the expansion of the Norwegian Parliament (1950s). During the 1960s, Ressell began experimenting with steel, which he implemented in designs like his Circle Armchair (1960s). In 1965, in collaboration with designer Cato Mansrud, Ressell designed the steel and canvas, safari-style Irafas Chair and Irafas Table for A. Grasaasen. The chair—which is safari spelled backwards—won second place at the Industry Council Chair Competition in 1965 and the Gold Medal at Ljubljana’s Biennial in 1966. In 1968, Ressell became the chief designer for Norwegian furniture company Vatne, and his seminal Falcon Chair (1970) soon followed. Originally named Blank Vals, the hammock-like chair was the result of a furniture competition for the Industry Council. Vatne began production of the chair in 1971 under the new name. Within two years, Vatne’s sales tripled as Falcon Chairs sold worldwide, particularly in the United States, Japan, Germany, and Australia. Originally produced with a chrome frame, the chair was redesigned with a lighter laminated base in 1974 for easier distribution

Vatne Møbler

Norwegian furniture manufacturer Vatne Møbler has a rich legacy underscored by visionary collaborations with iconic Norwegian furniture designers. The company’s mid-century modern and Scandinavian modern lounge chairs and armchairs are known for their quality leather upholstery that acquires a beautiful patina over time.

Vatne Møbler was established in 1946 by Knut Sæter in the village of Vatne, Norway. Sæter was an interior architect who studied at the Bergen School of Arts and Crafts. He designed and manufactured the company’s first pieces. In 1955, interior architect Gerhard Berg started working for Vatne Møbler. His designs — particularly for sofas — soon became popular.

Later in the 1950s, furniture designer Fredrik A. Kayser began creating pieces for Vatne Møbler. His furniture earned the company international acclaim. In 1960, Kayser’s 711 chair for Vatne Møbler won first place at an Industry Council chair competition.

After Kayser died in 1968, the company was overseen by interior designer Sigurd Resell. Resell’s most enduring contribution to Vatne Møbler was the 1970 Falcon armchair. The comfortable, leather-upholstered, X-framed chair came in second place at an Industry Council chair competition. In the 1970s, Resell designed a series of striking glass-topped Falcon coffee tables.

Vatne Møbler’s success lasted through the 1980s, a decade which included a collaboration with furniture designer Olav Eldøy. In 1989, the company encountered financial problems and was sold to Norwegian manufacturer Stokke AS.

In 2002, Knut Sæter’s son, Per Arne Sæter, reopened the family business by relaunching Kayser’s classic designs along with a new collection. Production shut down in 2008 due to the financial crisis, but started again in 2010.

In 2015, the grandson of Knut Sæter, Amund Sæter, published Møbeleventyret Vatne: Boken om Vatne Møbler 1946-1989, a book about the early history of Vatne Møbler. The company continues to operate the Vatne Møbler As store in Norway.

One chair retains original brass plaquette from Wengler, Copenhagen, Tove Kindt-Larsen (née Reddersen, 1906-1994) was one of the first female designers to emerge during Denmark’s ‘Golden Era’ in the mid-twentieth century. She is well-known for working with her husband, Edvard Kindt-Larsen (1901- 1982), but her own influence should not be underestimated. Her furniture was characterized by a fine sense of quality and a design language that responded to evolving tastes of the time. She was an early pioneer in rattan chairs and the use of molded plywood and well as moving away from designing room sets and instead conceiving individual pieces of furniture so that homeowners could curate their own spaces. An architect by training, with several years of furniture design under her belt, she embarked on a furniture design course at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, under the ‘godfather of Danish design’ Kaare Klint, where she met her husband. Edvard had already gained recognition for a grand-scale hotel project by the lakes of Copenhagen and, during their studies, the pair discovered their collaborative spirit and shared affinity for high-quality natural materials and complementary contrasts. They married in 1937 and established a joint design studio in 1945. Together, they broke the connection with Victorian furniture and designed everything from furniture to silverware, jewelry, rugs, textiles, wallpaper and even exhibitions and buildings, with a focus on functionalism throughout.
