About the Item
Sculptural 1940s Bentwood Armchairs by Koželka
Kropáček with Original Green Upholstery – Prague, Czechoslovakia
A rare and elegant pair of bentwood armchairs designed in the 1940s by Karel Koželka and Antonín Kropáček, pioneers of Czech post-war modernism. These sculptural lounge chairs are celebrated for their distinctive curved armrests and clean, architectural lines, exemplifying the refined craftsmanship and innovation that earned the designers the Silver Medal at the 1946 Milan Triennale.
Each chair features a gracefully bent beechwood frame with a rich, warm patina and rounded arms that flow seamlessly into the back legs. The wood displays age-appropriate wear and character, adding to their authenticity and appeal.
The original green upholstery is patterned with subtle ivory geometric dots and trimmed with complementary piping. While visually intact and historically valuable, the textile does show signs of age. We recommend professional reupholstery prior to everyday use to restore both comfort and durability while preserving the unique silhouette of these rare chairs.
Ideal for collectors and design enthusiasts, these armchairs make a bold yet understated statement in any setting—whether used as occasional chairs in a refined lounge or as focal pieces in a curated interior.
