About the Item
A quintessential example of 1970s Canadian Mid-Century Modernism, the Solair chair (often called the "Motel Chair") was designed by architects Fabiano and Panzini. This set of six black chairs embodies the "Space Age" aesthetic with its sleek, perforated bucket seats and minimalist iron frames. Originally popularized by roadside motels across North America, these chairs have become a permanent fixture in the history of industrial design.
The chairs feature lightweight, durable perforated plastic (polyethylene) seats supported by a wrought iron or enameled steel "X" frame. The high-back "clamshell" or "shellback" design provides ergonomic support, while the perforations allow for ventilation and drainage, making them ideal for poolside or patio use. The high-contrast black-on-black color way offers a sophisticated, modern look that is more versatile for high-end interiors and gardens than the typical bright primary colors.
