Evoking the serene elegance of Scandinavian modernism with a modernist edge, this pair of De La Espada woven leather sling lounge chairs is a study in enduring craftsmanship and tactile restraint. The sleek, low-slung frames are lovingly carved from solid ash wood finished in a honeyed oil sheen that highlights the grain's graceful movement without overshadowing it. The seats and backs are a masterclass in artisanal detail: supple cognac-hued leather straps, expertly woven in an interlocking grid, deliver a softly suspended embrace. The leather has been meticulously cleaned and conditioned, preserving its rich patina while ensuring resilient comfort. Every structural detail speaks to De La Espada’s exacting standards. Mortise-and-tenon, dovetail, and lap joints are fused with slow-drying glue that penetrates the wood fibers deeply, forging bonds meant to endure generations. Sustainability is integral to the ethos—timber is responsibly sourced and intentionally pruned to reduce knots and maximize grain consistency, signaling a commitment to both beauty and conservation. With dimensions of approximately 25 inches wide, 31 inches deep, and 28.5 inches high (with a 15.5-inch seat height), these chairs command presence while retaining a sculptural subtlety. In a lounge or intimate living space, they create an atmosphere of poised invitation—both grounded and elevated, quiet yet cinematically staged. De La Espada is regarded globally as a design powerhouse—a fine balance of high-artistry, premium materials, and Portugal-based fabrication fueled by solar-powered ateliers. These chairs reflect that legacy—a union of European craftsmanship and innovative modernist spirit. These De La Espada 128 lounge chairs are the first we've had from this maker and we're seriously impressed. Not to be outdone by the impeccable Scandinavian Modern design, the materials, fit and finish are superb. The solid, honey colored ash wood contrasts perfectly with the dark cognac leather straps. The ash is finished in Danish oil to preserve and protect the wood without muting the beautiful grain. The smooth straps interweave to form a seat and back that provide both powerful support and comfortable suspension. De La Espada timber is sustainably harvested. The trees on the farms are pruned regularly to allow for consistent grain patterns and fewer knots, ensuring exceptionally strong planks of the highest quality. Mortise and tenon joints, dovetailing and lap joints combined with slow-drying wood glue that seeps deep into the fibers of the solid wood create strong, unbreakable bonds adding long life to every piece of furniture they make. Our restoration team cleaned, conditioned and touched-up the original dark brown cognac leather. The leather straps were also cleaned and conditioned to stave off cracking down the road. Finally, the frames were detailed top to bottom. Hailing from Porto and Madrid respectively and educated in London, the founders opened the first De La Espada store in London in 1996, when there was comparatively little quality contemporary furniture in the city. The De La Espada aesthetic evolved from influences including the Arts and Crafts movement, architects such as Tadao Ando, Luis Barragán, John Pawson, and Álvaro Siza, and Scandinavian design from the 1950s. De La Espada operated as a designer/manufacturer/retailer of our own products until 2007 when we began to enter into the second phase of the business. Since 2007, we have taken a more collaborative approach, working closely with carefully selected design partners and retailers across the world, combining expertise and exchanging cultures, friendships, and ideas.
