About the Item

Iconic "Spoke Chair" designed by Kappei Toyoguchi, manufactured by Tendo in Japan in 1963. The original model of this design was the windsor chair. The spoke chair places an emphasis on the flavor of Japan. It is fitted tot the size of the average Japanese person and their living environment. The surface of the oval-sized seat is rather large, so it can be sat on with crossed or folded legs. The height of the seat is low enough for a seated person to be at the same eye-level of a person who is seated on the floor in the Japanese manner. The seat also has a unique structure: due to the mounting of spokes, the front part of the seat hangs over slightly. This chair first began to sell in 1965, but production was stopped in 1973. However, after having received many comments from fans, production of the chair began again in 1995. This chair is made of beautiful quality beechwood with a lovely pink fabric upholstery to the seat, giving it an outstanding appearance. In good original condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. About the designer: Kappei Toyoguchi was born in Kemanai of Kazuno city, Akita, Japan. After graduating from the Department of Machinery at Akita Prefecture Industrial School, he became an assistant at the Secondary Industrial School in Yokohama. He was one of the most promising future engineers, but he suffered through the Great Kanto Earthquake. Luckily, he was not killed by it, so returned back to Akita. While working as a substitute teacher, he took the entrance examinations and was admitted tot the Tokyo Advanced Crafts School, Department of Craft Design. At this school, he studied under Kurata Munechika who was strongly drawn to German furniture and architecture. Kurata had just returned from studying at Bauhaus. Toyoguchi became a member of the Keiji kobo which was led by Kurata. Instead of the original idea of metaphysics, they put more emphasis on design and shape. After working with the Keiji Kobo, he started to work at the Crafts Institute (later called Industrial Arts Institute) with a recommendation from Kunii Kitaro. He then became an independent designer as well as a professor at Musashino Art University, Department of Industrial Design.
