About the Item

Tove Edvard Kindt-Larsen for Gustav Bertelsen, lounge chair 'Fireplace', teak, leather, Denmark, 1940 This Danish lounge chair was meticulously crafted for the purpose of accompanying a fireplace, evoking a sense of warmth and comfort. When the model was first exhibited, this chair was hailed as a masterpiece of modern design, admired for their distinctive and noteworthy features. Notably, the inclusion of an X-shaped crossbar beneath the seat exemplifies one of its defining characteristics. The seat itself, with its gracefully concave shape, is skilfully separated from the wooden frame. The armrests possess a captivating curvature, gracefully arcing atop the rests and gently trailing towards the chair's posterior. The warm tone of the teak harmoniously complements the original cognac leather upholstery, creating a seamless fusion of materials. Over time, the leather has developed a beautiful patina that gives the chair more character and charm. Tove (1906-1994) and Edvard (1901-1982) Kindt-Larsen were a Danish designer couple. Both of them were trained as architects and had studied under the guidance of Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In the beginning of his career, Edvard used a combination of shiny, painted surfaces with untreated wood or created one piece of furniture out of several different kinds of wood. However, a large part of his success is due to the collaboration with his wife, Tove. During their marriage and partnership as architects and furniture designers, they were at the forefront of Danish and Scandinavian design. Nowadays they are known for refined, modest design executed with the highest quality materials. Kindly note that the chair shows patinated leather and irregularities in the leather, common for pieces this age. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
