About the Item
A Large Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Mahogany And Leather Upholstered Armchair, or Fauteuil de Bureau.
The channelled frame and open arms adorned with stiff-leaf gilt-bronze frames and paterae. The sprung seat, padded back and arms upholstered in dark green leather.
France, Circa 1890.
This 'presidential' armchair is large and comfortable, making it perfect to complement a bureau plat or desk. The design is derived from a type of Louis XVI period armchair called a ‘fauteuil à la reine’, characterised by a flat and slightly inclined back above a wider, trapezoidal seat designed for comfort, and open armrests. The grand proportions of this chair identify it as dating to the late nineteenth century when it became fashionable for houses to be built with a room designated as an office or ‘bureau de monsieur’. Such a chair would have served as a seat of authority, positioned behind a large desk, befitting a captain of industry or Gilded Age ‘Robber Baron’.

François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter (1770-1841) was Napoléon’s pre-eminent court cabinetmaker. He built up the business of his father, the well-known chairmaker Georges Jacob, into one of the most important and successful furniture workshops in Paris which by 1808 employed 332 workmen producing annually furniture valued at 700,000 francs.
