Planula desk chair, Perry King and Santiago Miranda for Planula, attributed to Ettore Sottsass, Italy, 1970s
This rare office chair has a very distinct aesthetic that is synonymous with Italian office furniture from the 70’s. The seat is designed using minimal soft curves which are fully upholstered. Perhaps the most distinctive element of this chair is the base structure which is created from polished moulded metal. The chair has been reupholstered recently in a luxurious fabric by Aldeco Portugal.
The original caster wheels have been replaced to help increase their functionality. Minor scratches and marks can be found across the surfaces of the metal base. 2 sets available.
Perry King is a British designer who specialised in industrial design before moving to Italy in the early 60’s. His work for Olivetti spanned environmental design, industrial design, furniture, interior design, and graphics. His career crossed paths with many important designers of the age including Ettore Sottsass, designing the iconic Valentine typewriter with him in 1968. His most enduring working relationship was with Santiago Miranda who he set up a design studio with and designed these chairs with for the Italian manufacturer Planula.
