About the Item

An iconic and extremely rare first-generation Eames side chair in lovely vintage condition. This fantastic chair is a treasure of design history, produced in London by esteemed British maker Hille in collaboration with Herman Miller in the late 1950s/early 1960s, which will add a genuine Mid Century Modernist ‘Eames’ aesthetic to any interior. Designed in 1957, this No.680 chair was the first chair Eames ever designed as part of their Aluminium Group of chairs and as a ‘first-generation’ model, it’s the design that originally went into production, before parts and materials were later tweaked. It’s such an early chair in fact, that they hadn’t yet adopted the Eames ‘EA’ naming process, which came about from 1966, when the 680 model became the EA101. The first of the original four Aluminium Group chairs produced by Eames from 1957-1965, (the others being the 680S, 686 and 686S) the 680 was designed with the following qualifications: “Side Task Chair, No Arms, Fixed – Pedestal Base”. Herman Miller has always produced Eames chairs and Hille produced Eames chairs for Herman Miller in Europe from the late 1950s for just over a decade, before Vitra got the whole European contract for Eames production. This chair has the original “Herman Miller Made by Hille of London” sticker beneath the seat, and being a first-generation design, was likely made in the early 1960s but could even be a late 1950s production. Sleek, durable, versatile and attractive, this iconic chair features an aluminium frame and a specially produced grey ribbed Eames ‘Naugahyde’ (durable faux leather) seat. It has the lovely Eames under-seat ‘U’ support over the smart black central column and sturdy 4-star base. Set on the original white rubber feet, the design of this first-generation base really sets it apart from later generation models, as it's much more angular and unapologetically Brutalist – a true child of the post-war design movement. All in all this is a fantastic rare chair. Highly versatile as a dining, office, side or accent chair, it’s also a wonderful piece of museum-worthy design history, which won’t fail to add streamlined styling and a genuine Mid Century aesthetic to any setting. CONDITION This is in good vintage condition. Structurally sound and built to last, it has minor to-be-expected signs of age, including minor scratches to the black finish on the central column and some slight splitting to the right side of the seat. The original “Herman Miller Made by Hille of London” sticker can still be read on the ‘U’-shaped seat support. Overall it’s an iconic and extremely rare first-generation Eames original chair, and if well looked after it should remain so for another 60+ years – please see the photos. DIMENSIONS Height – 84cm, Width – 50cm, Depth – 54cm, Seat Height – 44cm, Seat Width – 48cm, Seat Depth – 39cm, Weight – 5.5kg.

1960s Eames 3474 Time Life Executive Lobby Desk Chair Vitra ES104 Black Leather
By Vitra, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in London, GB
An extremely rare and museum-worthy 1960s model of the Eames Time-Life Desk Chair in lovely vintage condition. Widely considered the most iconic office chair design of the 20th Century, this especially rare version of an outstanding armchair will provide superb quality and comfort and will add a quintessential Mid-Century, 1960s-cool, ‘Mad Men’ aesthetic to any interior. Eames Time-Life Desk Chairs are in high demand for their quality, durability and scarcity, especially in working condition and upholstered in leather, and even more so if they’re one of the oldest, first-generation models from the 1960s, such as this one. What makes this particular chair even more of a special piece is that this model hardly ever comes to market and a recent exhaustive search has found only one other – in a design museum. A real gem, a design collector’s delight and one of the rarest early versions of one of the most sought-after chairs, this armchair was made 1960-1968 (or 1961-1970 depending on which maker’s website you read) and was produced in Switzerland by Vitra, who have held the European licence for manufacturing Eames furniture since 1957. The only other example we’ve found of this extremely rare European version of this much sought-after design icon is on the Vitra Design Museum’s website itself. This superb chair goes by several names and can be called: the Eames Time Life Desk Chair, the Eames Executive Office Chair, the Eames 3474 (manufactured 1960-1968) or the later ES104 (manufactured 1968-1985). To somewhat further confuse the name, this super chair is similar to, but distinct from its precursor, the Time-Life Lobby Lounge Chair (which was made as a lounge chair specifically for the lobby of the Time Life Building in New York), and so this chair can also sometimes be called an Eames Lobby Chair, or an Eames Lobby Desk Chair. We like to use its correct moniker, the Eames Time Life Lobby Desk Chair or Eames 3474, which was released in 1961 as an adaptation of the slightly shorter, wider, squarer and more angle-backed Eames Time Life Lobby Lounge Chair released in 1960. Expertly made, this extremely comfortable and reassuringly heavy armchair features plush, padded and buttoned black leather cushions to the seat, back and arms, over an aluminium frame set on the 1960s four-star aluminium base. Distinguishing it from the Herman Miller (American licensee) produced 1960s version are the Vitra bolt-handle tilting mechanism and the Vitra black plastic ball feet casters with aluminium hoods, making this particular model an extremely rare (almost never seen outside of the Vitra Design Museum catalogue) version of this already very rare and much sought-after armchair. All in all this is an incredibly rare, museum-worthy 1960s design icon, which won’t fail to add outstanding quality, comfort and quintessential Mid Century style and sophistication to any setting. AUTHENTICITY The labels on these early chairs appear to have been stuck to the underside only and as such, few labels still remain and such is the case with this chair, which no longer has an Eames or Vitra label. However, we’re 100% confident that this is an original 1960s Eames chair...

Pair Eames Herman Miller DAX Leather Armchairs 1960s MCM Rope Edge Shell Bucket
By Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames, Vitra
Located in London, GB
A gorgeous and extremely rare pair of early 1960s caramel leather Eames DAX armchairs. A very special collaborative pair between Herman Miller and Vitra, these stunning armchairs work as lounge chairs, occasional chairs or dining chairs and will add stunning two-tone colouring and a fabulous Space Age 1960s aesthetic to any interior. The DAX armchair was first produced in 1952 and is the most sought-after version of Charles and Ray Eames's classic fibreglass chairs, which revolutionised 20th Century furniture. Sometimes called the Eames 'Shell Chair', 'Bucket Chair' or 'Rope Edge Chair', this pair of DAX armchairs (which stands for Dining Height Armchair X-Base) has 'Greige' coloured (a combination of grey and beige) fibreglass shells, one of the three original Eames fibreglass shell colours produced from the early 1950s. This pair is fourth generation (made from 1959 onwards) as they have the improved white nylon glide feet and 'H-bases', so were likely manufactured in the early 1960s. These wonderful armchairs features four-legged tubular steel chrome H-bases above all original & complete nylon glide feet. They have 'greige' fibreglass 'V'-stamped (for Vitra) shell seats, which join to the bases via Herman Miller marked black shock mounts and are upholstered in beautiful caramel leather with lovely contrasting white plastic bordering. Much sought after for their simplicity, beautiful lines and their status as design icons, the gorgeous colouring and extremely rare collaborative authenticity of this pair of DAX chairs makes them even more special. Comfortable, iconic, exceptionally rare and effortlessly cool, these are a stunning and timeless pair of armchairs. HERMAN MILLER / VITRA COLLABORATION & MARKINGS Ray and Charles Eames began designing for Herman Miller in the late-1940s, since when the Herman Miller company has manufactured Eames furniture including the DAX chair, and in 1957 the Herman Miller company assigned the Swiss company Vitra the manufacturing licenses for the European market, since when they have also made Eames furniture including the DAX chair. These two DAX chairs both have the Herman Miller logo markings to their black shock mounts and also have an embossed 'V' (for Vitra) on the underside of fibreglass shells, next to which the original Herman Miller sticker would have been placed. We therefore surmise that this pair would have been a collaborative effort produced for the European market between Herman Miller, who may have supplied the base (or at the very least the shock mounts) and Vitra, who made the fibreglass shell (and possibly all of the chair apart from the shock mounts.) Despite extensive digging we haven't been able to find a detailed history of such collaborations between Herman Miller and Vitra, as it's rather nuanced and may have been carried out ad-hoc basis that wasn’t recorded in the histories of the companies. However, we think it highly plausible such collaborations would have happened, as both companies made the same Eames products and so could well have used each other's know-how and parts in the interest of keeping the Eames brand and products up to the highest specifications possible. Hence this very rare pair of twice-marked Eames DAX chairs...

Aluminium Chair EA108 by Charles and Ray Eames  for Herman Miller - 60s
By Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Padova, IT
True icons of twentieth century design, the seats of the Aluminum Group series were designed by Charles and Ray Eames in the 1950s and were first created in 1958, defining what is still the standard for meeting chairs today. A clean and visible structure, which combines the stability and lightness of aluminum with the comfort of a covering - in leather, fabric or mesh - which, being kept taut only by fixing to the sides, becomes an integral part of the joint. With an extraordinary sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned...
