About the Item

This rare revolving aircraft navigator’s seat, Model 360, was designed and manufactured by the Warren McArthur Corporation in 1947 for installation in the Grumman XJR2F Albatross, a military seaplane developed in the immediate post–World War II era. McArthur, widely recognized for his prewar aluminum modernist furniture, transitioned during the war into aviation design, where his lightweight tubular engineering translated seamlessly into specialized aircraft seating. The Model 360 demonstrates McArthur’s focus on plane-specific solutions. Its tubular aluminum frame, reinforced with cross-bracing, was designed to withstand the demands of flight while maintaining the light weight essential to aircraft interiors. The revolving base allowed navigators to pivot easily between map tables, instrument panels, and communications equipment in the cramped quarters of the fuselage. Cushioned seat and back panels, upholstered in aviation-grade fabric with padded armrests, provided ergonomic support during extended missions. The Grumman XJR2F Albatross was a transitional seaplane design, a precursor to the legendary SA-16 Albatross that would later serve the U.S. Air Force and Navy in reconnaissance and rescue roles. This navigator’s seat, as part of that early production, represents a rare survival of specialized aviation furniture tied to both McArthur’s industrial design legacy and mid-century American aerospace history. Today, the Model 360 is a highly collectible artifact, appealing equally to design connoisseurs, aviation historians, and modernist collectors
