Aesthetic Movement Chinoiserie Faux Bamboo Ottoman with Monkey Musician Upholstery
A whimsical and theatrical ottoman in the Aesthetic Movement and Chinoiserie Revival style, crafted in the 20th century. The faux bamboo frame is rendered in lacquered and parcel-gilt wood, accented with turned stretcher rails hung with decorative bells. Raised on cabriole-style legs with stylized scrolled feet, the piece is richly detailed yet playful in spirit.
The seat is upholstered in a lively custom Victorian-style fabric depicting monkey musicians amid neoclassical urns, garlands, and draped motifs—executed in a dramatic palette of black, gold, and crimson. Brass nailhead trim completes the upholstered edge with tailored elegance.
This ottoman is strongly evocative of the exotic and ornamental furniture of Gabriel Viardot, the Anglo-Japanese influence of the English Aesthetic Movement, and the theatrical fantasy of Tony Duquette. While unmarked, it demonstrates the craftsmanship and exuberance associated with revivalist design traditions spanning the late 19th through mid-20th century.
