About the Item

A beautiful Art Deco tabouret or stool / footstool, dating from around 1925. Manufactured by Friedrich Otto Schmidt, Vienna / Austria. The stool features an elegant round shape and impresses above all with its well-preserved condition. It is still upholstered with the original fabric, which remains in outstandingly good condition — clean and with hardly any signs of wear. We assume that this stool may have never been used, which makes it a particularly rare piece of furniture in museum-quality condition. The stool is marked on the underside: Friedrich Otto Schmidt, Wien, IX, Währinger Straße 28 Numbered: 11859 Friedrich Otto Schmidt was a traditional and renowned Viennese company, founded in 1853, specializing in the production of high-quality interior furnishings. The company gained particular recognition through the Schmidt brothers — Max, Otto, and Leo — who maintained close relationships with leading artists and designers of the turn of the century. Especially significant was their collaboration with the famous architect Adolf Loos. Through these partnerships and their active involvement in the reform movements of Viennese arts and crafts around 1900, Friedrich Otto Schmidt became one of the key representatives of Viennese Modernism. Today, the company’s furniture pieces are highly sought-after collector’s items, celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design.
