Store closing March 31. Rare and phenomenal George Hunzinger lollipop rocking chair, circa 1885. The first stationery rocker ever. Carved and lacquered wood, enameled steel, upholstery, brass. The lollipop chair was a defining expression of the aesthetic movement in America, 1880-1890. Measures: 25.5 W × 28 D × 33 H in (65 × 71 × 84 cm) This comfortable and visually delightful stationery rocker features Hunzinger's original patented steel and spring rocking mechanism in working order. Condition: Areas of finish have worn away long edges of backrest and along outer edges of frame in keeping with age and use. Upholstery was attractively updated 10 years ago with brushed leather to match the previous seat covering and is in very good condition. Rocking mechanism functions properly. Joints at proper left of seat are slightly separated, but are still solid, stabile and do not affect the mechanics or comfort. Overall very good antique condition with an attractive patina. George Hunzinger (1835-1898) was a German-born American furniture designer whose innovative work depended as much on his mechanized manufacturing process as it did on his patents. He was known for his novel patented designs, like the spring mechanism utilized in this chair, and for his emphasis on interchangeable parts. According to Barry Harwood's "The furniture of George Hunzinger: Invention and innovation in 19th century America", p. 102, this interchangeability of parts is apparent in many of his side, rocking, and armchairs that make use of the spring rocker patent. Hunzinger was a truly forward-thinking innovator, and his chair designs seem to anticipate modern aesthetics with their tendency toward abstraction, resemblance to the machines that produced them, and emphasis on interchangeability.
