About the Item
Rare and documented French modernist rocking chair model “Deauville”, designed by Gilles Sermadiras De Pouzols de Lile and produced by Maison et Jardin.
This sculptural rocking chair is an example of early French post-war garden furniture, combining an elegant painted wooden frame with a suspended red canvas sling seat, decorated with a graphic diamond-pattern stitching. The softly curved rockers and generous proportions give the chair a relaxed yet architectural presence, perfectly reflecting the spirit of modern outdoor living in early 1950s France.
This model is documented in La Maison Française, no. 58, June 1952, one of the most influential French magazines dedicated to interior design, architecture, and modern living in the post-war period.
This publication confirms the model name, designer, production date, and its original context as part of Maison et Jardin’s garden furniture program.
The chair is in very good vintage condition, with a solid and stable structure. The painted wooden frame shows only minor signs of age consistent with careful use. The canvas sling seat is well preserved, retaining its original character and decorative stitching. The rocking mechanism functions smoothly, with no structural issues.
Designs by Gilles Sermadiras are increasingly sought after for their refined balance between modernist structure and decorative elegance.
A rare opportunity to acquire a historically documented French mid-century design piece, equally suited to refined interior settings or covered outdoor spaces.
