About the Item
This rare nine-piece serpentine sectional—attributed to French designer Étienne Fermigier, 1970s—channels the modular exuberance of postmodern living. Each bulbous module retains its original upholstery in a saturated spectrum from oxblood to fuchsia to blue, resting playfully on Fermigier’s signature rubber ball feet.
Sculptural and unapologetically expressive, the composition morphs with placement, offering endless configurations. A bold architectural gesture disguised as a place to lounge.
Étienne Fermigier (1932–1973) was a visionary force in postwar French design, whose career, though tragically brief, left an enduring imprint. Trained at both the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, he opened his own studio in 1957 and quickly established a language of form that felt both industrial and poetic.
Fermigier was drawn to the aesthetics of production—embracing emerging materials like molded foam and metal to craft silhouettes that were at once functional and sculptural. Best known for his sinuous, organic seating, he also turned his hand to a wide range of objects, from radios and televisions to desk accessories and hardware—each imbued with a quiet, modern clarity.
Condition: Fair vintage condition, with significant wear and various tears to the upholstery. Includes a few brackets to keep the pieces in-tact. Reupholstery recommended; we have elected to sell this sectional in its current state so the end user can select fabric.
