About the Item
Before the death of his brother Louis in 1761, Michel Cresson was commissioned to make chairs for the prince de Condé at his residence in Paris, the Palace Bourbon, and his château in Chantilly. Several works attributed to Michel Cresson entered the Louvre in 1989, including two couches and two armchairs (with perfectly inscribed woodwork), and two consoles. They belonged to a number of exceptional pieces of Cresson’s work commissioned by the marquis de Sourches for his château d’Abondant. Two armchairs of this group were shown for sale in Paris on March 16, 1998 with the collection of Jacqueline Delubac (P Kjellberg, 2002).
Not much is known about Michel Cresson’s work after 1773 (P Kjellberg, 2002).
