About the Item

An exceptionally rare and coveted settee by Gio Ponti for Cassina, circa 1950s, with reupholstered white bouclé fabric cushions, refinished elm frames with incredible wood grain, signature slatted backs and sculptured arms. Such an important design classic, this settee is accompanied by a pair of matching armchairs. (Sorry, the pair of armchairs have now sold and are not available however armchairs of this design are much more common than this rare settee, therefore it would be easy to create a set if you wish, contact us for details). Cushions were reupholstered with a nubby white bouclé. We refinished the sculptural elm frames with a hand wax for a light sheen, retaining the age and accentuating the wood grain. Ideal set for collectors, investors or art and design, and interior designers looking for something incredible special for that important client. This sculpted elm loveseat sofa by Gio Ponti for Cassina would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Post-Modern, Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. MEASUREMENTS: H 32" x W 48" x D 30" Seat Height: 13.5" Seat Depth: 18.75" Arm Height: 22.25" CONDITION: Excellent restored condition. Elm frames were refinished and cushions reupholstered. Ready for immediate use.

Loveseat Sofa by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy, c 1970, Signed
By Sormani, Claudio Salocchi
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This newly reupholstered loveseat sofa by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, circa 1970s, features a graceful chrome frame with nubby white bouclé fabric. Signed with 1960s/ 1970s Sormani label as shown in photo gallery. *Note, we have the matching pair of club chairs available in another listing. The graceful frame shares a design quality with Cassina's LC2 / LC3 design by Le Corbusier, as they are 'buckets of cushions' in similar fashion and comfort. However this Sormani sofa features some unique subtle details, such as the slight "twist" in the rear legs (see photos). Signed with a Sormani label, this particular rare design is attributed to Claudio Salocchi. While there were several other famous designers who created works for Sormani in this time period, the style best matches Salocchi's work. For collectors looking for something unique and rare within a collection of 1960s/ 1970s Italian designs, this pair two-seater couch is an amazing opportunity. This Cassina LC2 / LC3 loveseat...

Manufacturing label under the frame. Cassina Spa is an Italian company operating in the contemporary furniture sector, founded in 1927 in Meda (Milan) by Cesare and Umberto Cassina. The main activity is woodworking, within the company, for the production of coffee tables. Over the years the company expands, especially after the war, also thanks to collaborations with external architects who bring their expertise and research. In the 1950s, Cassina switched from artisanal to serial production, adopting the logic of industrial design. A change also induced by the commission for furnishings for the interiors of large cruise ships. In addition, some of the company's best-known products took shape during this period: chair 646 and chair 699, known as the "Superleggera", both designed by Gio Ponti. In 1963 Vico Magistretti joins the company team of designers, creating the Carimate armchair...
