Rococo Revival Walnut Parlor Suite with Settee and Four Chairs, 19th Century

About the Item

Likely crafted in England circa 1880, this suite consists of two arm chairs, a pair of side chairs and a settee of nicely diminutive proportions. Each crest is deeply and robustly carved with an inset series of C-scroll flourishes around hints of foliage and a single flower. The touches of acanthus are only hinted at in the fluted leaf carvings around the frame and arm supports. Each piece is crafted to appear as light as possible, the legs curving with an unnatural thinness of proportions that creates an illusion of daintiness in what is actually a quite heavily crafted suite. The cabriole legs are perfect with their full cyma curvature under the floral carved knees, each foot terminating in a full scrolled toe. All pieces retain an early mustard velvet upholstery with only minor discolorations and staining, this remaining comfortable and well sprung in it's present condition. They remain a striking suite that works wonderfully with a broad range of taste - being of the late Victorian era, these flow nicely with the bold revival styles of the 1860's-1900's; however, the clear French influence allows them to blend wonderfully with a French interior. Measurements: [side chairs] 18 3/4" W x 18" D x 34 5/8" H, 18 1/2" H to seat; [arm chairs] 25 1/2" W x 20 1/2" D x 36 5/8" H, 17 1/2" H to seat; [settee] 51" W x 22 1/2" D x 36 1/4" H, 18" H to seat Condition Report: [ARM CHAIRS] Only one of the arm chairs is shown from the front in the pictures. Repair at joint of handhold and arm support; old cracks/separations where arm meets back; minor cracks to rear seat rail. One chair upholstery with several discolorations/stains. [SIDE CHAIRS] Crack in back rail of one (not concerning). [SETTEE] Minor wear to surfaces. [OVERALL] All pieces are sturdy and strong, comfortable and ready to be enjoyed in the home. All upholstery is old and should be changed (discoloration/light staining to all chairs). Age appropriate wear/chipping/finish loss.
