About the Item

17th century South Yorkshire oak backstool, the two scroll carved arched back each with turned acorn drops, to panelled seat over turned and railed under-frame. English, circa 1660-1680 By repute, the carved centre of the back rail covertly represents the head of Charles I, and the acorn the oak tree in which he hid after the battle of Worcester. These emblems showed the owner’s support for the Crown and the Royalist Cause. See the photo of Charles I for likeness of the carving in the stool back. Photo of the engraving of King Charles I, by M. van der Gucht, after Anthony Van Dyck. The Welcome Collection Ref: 2033775i.
