About the Item

Pair of Baltimore, Maryland classical paint-decorated fancy side chairs. Made of poplar and probably maple, the tablet crest with an applied scroll above two turned posts centering a narrow slat, old, possibly original cane seat, and distinctive shaped seat frame ends, raised on beehive- and ring-turned front legs and tapered splaying rear legs with an upper beehive-form turning joined by plain offset box stretchers with the tapered front stretcher having a central turning. Circa 1840 Each retains an early, probably original surface with touch-ups and possibly an over-lacquered surface, having a central spread-wing eagle surrounded by foliate devices on the tablet and foliate devices on the slat. Circa 1840. Dimensions: 31 1/4" HOA, 17 1/4" H seat, 17 3/4" x 15 3/4" seat. Provenance: From a Georgia private collection. Sloans Kenyon, 4/28/2009, lot 821.
