About the Item

Charles Dudouyt fireplace chairs, made from beech wood and featuring rush seats, France, 1940s. A pair of Charles Dudouyt fireplace chairs, crafted from beechwood with rush seats, were produced in France during the 1940s. Known as "Fire Side" chairs, they feature low seats and beautifully carved frames. These chairs have been cleaned and waxed while retaining their original condition, showing some wear and a lovely patina. These armchairs are made in Normandy and have round legs constructed from solid beechwood. The design includes two ladder-like backrests adorned with round finials at the top. The wide and deep seats are upholstered with the original hand-woven rush. These country fire chairs are in excellent condition and boast a rich and attractive patina, making them an eye-catching addition to any interior space. Charles Dudouyt is celebrated among Art Deco furniture collectors for his unique blend of rustic and modernist design, distinguishing his work from the classic styles typical of early 20th-century France. Born in 1885, he studied at the Germain Pilon school and worked as a painter and illustrator for prominent French publishing houses. After returning from World War I in 1918, Dudouyt shifted his focus to interior design, creating lighting fixtures and decorative objects alongside his wife. In 1920, he founded a rustic furniture factory called L'Abeillée. He later moved to Paris in 1933 to establish La Gentilhommière, where he produced various furniture pieces, including chairs and cabinets, using woods like oak and ash, along with materials such as leather and wicker. Dudouyt was renowned for enhancing chunky proportions with elegant carvings, and his work features distinctive Art Deco elements, including geometric inlays and raised motifs. His pieces remain highly sought after by designers and collectors today. After he died in 1946, his son continued operating La Gentilhommière until its closure in 1960.
