About the Item

An intriguing Edwardian English oak chair with expressive Green Man carving. Circa 1900. A petite chair with refined proportion showcasing a bold finely hand-carved Green Man with foliate detail and scrolled back acanthus leaf uprights. With a beautifully shaped seat, the chair stands on tapering front legs. This chair embodies the Edwardian fascination with medieval imagery and nature symbolism. The Green Man — a timeless emblem of renewal and protection — is rendered here with uncommon skill, making the piece especially desirable for collectors of English oak, Arts Crafts, or Gothic Revival furnishings. In excellent condition, with the original dark, rich patina. Showing minimal wear. There are no loose joints, but due to the style of the construction there is some natural, minor give, typical of chairs of this period. There has been a rubber stopper added to the back, to stop the chair from knocking against a wall. Additional dimensions information: It is 43cm wide at the feet. The seat height is 47cm.

Glasgow School Oak Armchair George Walton Style Abingwood Liberty Co
By George Walton
Located in Norwich, GB
A superb Glasgow School Arts And Crafts oak armchair. After a design by George Walton for Liberty & Co. Circa 1895. The chair is almost identical to the George Walton design, but has a variant shaped top to the back. Literature: Daryl Bennett, 'Liberty Furniture 1875-1915'.4 Art Furniture, Page 131, plate 4.91. Sketch illustration of George Walton design. Please see photographs. The seating retains the original webbing and filling and has been padded and re-covered with brown leather and copperised studs. The studs are set how they were originally on the chair. Please refer to the last photograph showing the frame before re-upholstery. They have been slightly aged. The oak has the original patina, which has been waxed. There are some marks around the frame with an indentation to note to the top of one arm. The edges to the legs are knocked with use. The chair has a flattened curved arm with an elongated tapering back. The Abingwood design was considered some of the most distinctive of Walton's designs, strongly influenced by C R Mackintosh...
