About the Item

A remarkable side chair with a bentwood hollow backrest, ca. 1920s - 1930s This substantial, rather large chair exemplifies Haagse School design while hinting at prototype experimentation. Its patina and construction align with an early period, very possibly made in the 1920s to 1930s. The chair shows the geometric solidity typical of Haagse School furniture, with legs and side profiles strongly reminiscent of Hendrik Wouda’s style. At the same time, it experiments with lightness: the back is holllow and veneered (instead of solid) which indicates it may have been a prototype for lighter furniture. The backrest’s subtle curve reveals an influence of bentwood design, unusual for Haagse School but adding a distinct elegance. Condition: Structurally sound, with visible wear consistent with age and use. Corners and edges show age related wear and small pieces of veneer are missing, visible in close ups. Some pictures in the presentation added to show how decorative the chair looks as an accent piece. A rare and characterful accent chair, ideal for adding an authentic touch of Dutch Art Deco to an interior or enriching a curated collection of modernist Dutch design.
